The SAE classification defines the fluidity of transmission and drive gear oils without taking any other properties into account. In gearboxes and drive gears, winter properties are defined by viscosity class SAE 70W, 75W, 80W and 85W: the lower the number, the longer the oil remains functional in colder conditions. Correspondingly, the summer use classes are 90 and 140.

The main function of gear oil is to minimise wear. The oil must also have the right friction properties, so that, for example, the synchronisation mechanism works correctly and gear changes are smooth. The contact between the gears creates cutting forces that the oil must be able to resist. In addition, the oil must have good and correct anti-wear and pressure resistance properties.

The need for pressure resistance properties is higher in hypoid drive gears, where there are both high surface pressures and sliding contact between the gears. The oil must also dampen the noise and vibration caused by the movement of the gears.

More and more drivers are switching to synthetic oils, which enables more reliable lubrication in a wide temperature range. At the same time, power transmission losses are also reduced and the vehicle's fuel economy improves. Due to better oxidation resistance, synthetic oil retains its properties even at prolonged oil change intervals.
